Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from bone marrow or adipose tissue are being studied as a potential therapy for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). MSCs are multipotent cells that can repair and modify tissues and immune responses. In vitro and animal studies have shown that MSCs can improve tissue repair and modify immune responses, which may make them useful in treating COPD. MSCs have also been shown to inhibit the abnormal inflammatory response and lung cell apoptosis that occurs in COPD.

Mesenchymal stromal cells: a novel therapy for the treatment …
In vitro cell culture and animal studies have demonstrated that mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have the capacity to modify immune responses and to enhance tissue repair. These properties of MSCs provided a rationale to investigate their potential for treatment of a variety of diseases, including COPD. Preclinical models support the hypothesis that MSCs may have clinical efficacy in COPD. However, although clinical trials have demonstrated the safety of MSC treatment, thus far they have not provided evidence for MSC efficacy in the treatment of COPD.

Mar 18, 2023 — So far, some clinical trials using MSC from bone marrow origin (BM-MSC) in COPD patients have reported promising results. Weiss et al. reported that infusion of BM-MSC can overall reduce levels of circulating protein C-reactive protein [9] and improve lung function in those with baseline high CRP levels [27].

Therapeutic effects of adipose-derived stem cells pretreated with …
Oct 21, 2016 — Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from bone marrow and adipose tissue have also demonstrated a therapeutic effect for COPD in an experimental cigarette smoke-induced model and elastase-induced emphysema model. Our previous research also demonstrated that bone-marrow-derived MSCs repaired cigarette smoke-induced emphysema.

Autologous adipose‐derived stem cells therapy in COPD treatment
Stem cell therapy in COPD is a new treatment approach. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are pluripotent stem cells that have been found to inhibit the abnormal inflammatory response of the disease and lung cells’ apoptosis in COPD.

1) What are mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)? They are multipotent cells found principally in bone marrow. Their main function is to make and repair skeletal tissues such as cartilage and bones. They are defined as a plastic-adherent cell population.
